yeah getting stared at can suck when you know it’s because you have short hair and hairy legs and the jeans or cargo shorts or buttondown or stance or attitude of a man, and yeah it feels pretty damn crummy to make eye contact with someone in a restaurant and see open confusion and disgust or hear a parent shush their toddler when they ask if you’re a boy or a girl, but when you’re in the supermarket and you look up from your list and see a kid just a little younger than you — just the age you were when you realized who you were — looking at you with the unspeakable joy and wonder of recognition it’s worth it. all of it is worth it
